SUNLESS TANNING
The only absolutely SAFE way to tan is without the sun and it's harmful radiation. Fortunately there are products available to help with this. Several products are listed below. These products for the most part work by combining with the natural amino acids on the surface of the skin. This ingredient has undergone decades of dermatological testing and has been proven safe. It will give you a gorgeous colour without spending a minute under the sun. Take precaution however if you do go out in the Sun with one of these on, they DO NOT contain any SUNSCREEN, so apply a sunscreen before going out into the sunshine. This method of tanning is recommended for light or fair skinned individuals. TOP

TANNING BEDS:
Many salons offer packages and single visits to use their tanning beds. These beds do however emit some of the same harmful radiation as the sun. Use these only if you have a medium to dark complexion. Start out with short visits and increase your stays after you have been going for awhile. These beds can be intense and burn you quicker than the sun, take precautions before you use one and talk to the salon operator for any questions. Also be aware that many prescription drugs can greatly affect the outcome from a vist to one of these beds or exposure to direct sunlight. SUN BATHING:
The sun emits some very harmful UV radiation and prolonged unprotected exposure is not recommended. We can't totally avoid the sun, so it is best when you are going to be out to wear some protection. Sunscreens now have a SPF rating on each product. This gives you an indication of how much protection they provide. For instance, a sunscreen with a SPF of 15 will provide you with enough protection, if properly applied, to stay in the sun for 15 hours and only get the amount of sun you would have gotten in 1 hour without sunscreen. Remember though in hot weather or while swimming, sunscreens have to be reapplied every few hours even if they say they are waterproof. Always apply sunscreen and wait at 15 to 30 minutes before entering the water to get the maximum effect. You should start with a high SPF (39 or better) and decrease only as you become slowly tanned. Also note that there are more than 1 kind of UV radiation and not all sunscreens protect against both. Also even people with dark complexions are still at risk in prolonged unprotected exposure to the sun.TOP

CAUTION:
Whether it's a sunbed or sunbathing, just one blistering sunburn can increase your chances of skin cancer. So take care of yourself when you are exposed and try not to rush a tan.TOP
